Introducing EMPOWER, a cutting-edge program that builds on the success of the earlier in-person Individualized Dietary Improvement Program (iDip). This initiative harnesses technology and expert advice to guide you toward your weight loss aspirations. Manabu Nakamura, an associate professor at the university, shares, “Our aim is to create an online tool for both preventing and treating weight issues in a clinical setting.”

Unlike the usual apps that zero in on calories, EMPOWER highlights the importance of protein and fiber—key components for a healthy weight. Nakamura cautions, “Reducing calories without considering protein can lead to muscle and bone loss instead of fat. For safe and effective results, increasing protein while cutting calories is essential.”

Rethinking Meal Planning

A standout feature of EMPOWER is MealPlot, which helps users track the protein and fiber in their meals. Ashleigh Oliveira, the study’s lead author, notes, “Most diet apps focus on macronutrients, but we encourage users to choose foods rich in protein and fiber to meet their meal goals.”

MealPlot guides users to diversify their food choices, naturally reducing calorie intake by opting for filling foods like lean meats, whole grains, fruits, and veggies. Oliveira says, “This method often leads to a calorie deficit because the foods within your target are more satisfying.”

Support for Lasting Results

While MealPlot offers a fantastic self-guided approach, the creators stress the added benefits of professional support for significant weight loss milestones. Nakamura mentions, “For those aiming to lose a large amount of weight, a routine and guidance from a skilled dietitian are crucial.”

The program suggests aiming to lose one pound per week, acknowledging that weight can fluctuate. Daily weigh-ins help track progress, and the app includes a chat feature for personalized advice from dietitians who can also oversee user progress.

Looking Ahead

Creating EMPOWER required collaboration between researchers and developers to design an intuitive interface using the USDA’s food database. Initial versions had users manually input their weight, but improvements now include a smart scale and a protein and fiber chart for enhanced usability.

The team is refining the app for a full release by spring 2026. This final version aims to make weight management more user-friendly and effective, equipping individuals with the resources and support to reach their health objectives.
